What happens after you pass PLABs?

As you must know that PLABs are a way to get a license to practice medicine in the U.K.

PLABs do not make you eligible for training ( post-graduation).

There is a lot of confusion about the journey after you pass your PLAB 2. So what do you really do after you appear for your PLAB 2 exam?

1. Create a GMC Online account

The following link helps you create a new GMC account/ apply for GMC registration.
With the link , you will find a questionnaire which will guide you to set up an account. If you are stuck at any point during your account opening process , check out the FAQs on the GMC website or mail them and ask for help.

2. Keep applying for jobs

These are the two websites which help you apply for jobs in the UK . Mostly non-training jobs are advertised on these websites and applications are open through-out the year.

A. Trac Jobs website

B. NHS jobs website

To apply for training jobs ( not recommended personally for new doctors in the country), go to Oriel and find training jobs in the desired specialties ( applications not usually open through-out the year).

3. Prepare for your interviews

Once you have applied for a job , you will get short listed for an interview. The interview will be held either virtually ( on Skype, as in the case of my first job interview) or in person. You can ask for a virtual interview with your employer if you are not able to attend a personal interview. You will hear back from your employer in a week about whether you have been selected for the post or not. Don’t lose hope if you haven’t been, and keep applying for more jobs.

4. Apply for GMC registration

You will get your PLAB 2 results in a few weeks. Once you have passed, you will be eligible to apply for a GMC registration.

Go to your GMC Online account and apply for a GMC registration. Fill in all the required details in the application. This will include details about your primary medical qualification , demographics , your employment history etc.
The GMC will collect all the evidence for your inputs through scanned copies of your documents and mailing your employers/ medical council of your country for confirmation.

5. Apply for a work visa

Congratulations on getting your first job and the GMC registration. Your employer will issue a certificate of sponsorship document (CoS) which will help you to apply for a work visa. You employer will also give you a tentative date when you can begin working in the hospital. Enter all the necessary details in the work visa application.

6. Make arrangements for your travel to the U.K. and begin your work

Once you have your visa application approved, make all the arrangements ( including travel tickets, place of accommodation and basic necessities) to travel to the U.K.. Your employer will help you in this if needed. There is a relocation fund available for new doctors in many NHS trusts as well. This is to pay for their relocation expenses . Ask your employer if they have one, and they will help you out.
