Common terminologies for the U.K. doctor : Part I
Terminology on the GMC website and career blogs can be confusing for doctors not trained in the U.K. This is part I of the blog, clarifying those terminologies for you.
Foundation Training
This is similar to Internship / House job in your country . The duration is usually 1 year in other countries. In the U.K., it includes 2 years of training (FY1/Foundation year1 and FY2/Foundation year 2).
In each year, you can choose 3 rotations lasting for 4 months each. These rotations can be in different medical / surgical / general practice (GP) specialties.
Core Training
This is similar to post graduation training (M.D. / M.S.).
This usually lasts for 2 years as core training year 1(CT1) and core training year 2 (CT2).
Some of the variations of core training include :
CMT : Core medical training
CST: Core surgical training
IMT: Internal medicine training ( new name for CMT )
Specialty Training
This is similar to super-specialization training (D.M./ M.Ch.).
This can last from 3 to 6 years after completion of core training. The duration varies in different branches. (ST3–8)
Junior Doctor
Any doctor below the level of ST3 is a junior doctor. This includes all foundation doctors and core trainees.
Registrar
The person in a specialty training post is called a registrar. They are senior doctors.
Training Jobs
These are the jobs which lead to career progression and award a degree in the end.
This is similar to post — graduate training jobs in home countries.

These are the jobs which do not lead to career progression and do not award a degree in the end.
