Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS)
This post talks about how to get trained in acute medical specialties in the U.K.
What is ACCS?
Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) is a pathway in the U.K. aimed to produce multi-competent junior doctors able to recognize and manage the sickest of the patients.
It is the Core training program for trainees wishing to enter Higher specialty training in Emergency Medicine.
It is an alternative Core training program for trainees wishing to enter Higher specialty training in Anaesthesia and any of the Specialties listed on the JRCPTB website. (link attached)
How long is ACCS for?
ACCS is a three-year training program that normally follows Foundation Year 2.
What are the rotations in ACCS?
The first two years are spent rotating through :
- 1 year of Emergency Medicine + Acute Internal Medicine (usually 6 months each)
- 1 year of Anaesthesia + Intensive Care Medicine (usually 6 months each)
The third-year is spent in training that will ensure the trainee meets the minimum requirements for entry into Higher specialty training in their specialty of choice (EM, JRCPTB Specialty, Anaesthetics, ICM).
What are the personnel specifications for ACCS?
How can IMGs apply?
IMGs can apply after getting a CREST form signed if they are working as non-training doctors in the U.K.
Go to Oriel to make your application.
After the application, you will get invitations for interviews.
You will start in the post following a successful interview.
To note — ACCS Emergency medicine will use the MSRA (multi-specialty recruitment assessment), a written test before interviews, as part of the recruitment process for 2021.
