Training to become a surgeon takes time and is competitive.

However, it is not impossible.

I entered the U.K. to become a surgeon myself and have greatly researched this topic and hence writing this post for you.

What surgical specialties can you train in?

There are ten recognized surgical specialties.

  1. General surgery
  2. Cardiothoracic surgery
  3. Neurosurgery
  4. Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
  5. Otolaryngology (ENT)
  6. Pediatric surgery
  7. Plastic surgery
  8. Trauma and Orthopedic surgery
  9. Urology
  10. Vascular surgery

The pathway

The usual pathway for international doctors to get into surgical training is :

  1. Complete MBBS training in their home country
  2. Complete IELTS/ OET and pass PLABs
  3. Get registered with GMC
  4. Work as a doctor in a non-training surgical post (for 1 year) in the U.K.
  5. Get a CREST form signed by a consultant whom you’ve worked with, to get Foundation competencies

Do not exceed 18 months of experience in surgical specialties in any of the countries. This will eliminate you from getting into Core Surgical Training. You can still apply for higher surgical training though.
