The pathway

The usual pathway for international doctors to get into OBGyn training is :

  1. Complete MBBS training in your home country
  2. Complete IELTS/ OET and pass PLABs
  3. Get registered with GMC
  4. Work as a doctor in a non-training surgical post (for 1 year) in the U.K. (preferably OBGyn). Make an OBGyn specific portfolio and C.V. during this duration.

  5. Get a CREST form signed by a consultant whom you’ve worked with, to get Foundation competencies.
  6. Apply for Obstetrics & Gynaecology training via Oriel.
  7. Appear for the MSRA ( Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment) which is a multiple-choice question-based examination. On successful assessment, you will be shortlisted for interviews.
  8. You will get a national training number (NTN) in OBGyn and you will start your training if successful in interviews.
  9. The pathway is a run-through pathway for 7 years (ST 1–7). ‘Run-through’ means that you do not have to reapply for specialty training after completing core training. You will apply once before core training. Once selected you will be eligible for the 7 years program which makes you a consultant on successful completion.

Important points to note

  • If you have 24 months of experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology after foundation years (internship), you are said to be overqualified for this pathway and you cannot train via this pathway.
  • You can still go for the CESR route to become a consultant while you work as a non-training doctor in OBGyn.
